Office of the Public Defender

15th Judicial Circuit Palm Beach County

Become a Social Work Intern

Employees of the Social Sevices Division of the Office of the Public Defender assist attorneys and clients in many ways. In each case, the deliverables rendered will depend upon the client's unique needs, the availability of community services, the nature of the client's alleged offense, and other factors.

Social work interns at the Office of the Public Defender are typically students enrolled in Masters of Social Work ("MSW") programs at local universities who work with the office over the course of one academic year in order to establish and maintain relationships with clients in need of their services. First-year MSW student interns in the social work program develop case management, interviewing, and assessment skills by shadowing the office's mental health social workers. Interns also work with juveniles on probation, motivating offenders to complete their probationary requirements and work toward early termination of their probation. Second-year MSW student interns and graduates of MSW programs focus on individual therapy.

  • We accept two, first year MSW students throughout the year
  • We have MOUs with FAU, LSU, and Tulane University. Prior approval from the school is necessary
  • A student of any other College or University is welcome to apply. Prior approval from the school is necessary

  • We also accept volunteers if program is not filled by students, no college credit is earned

Testimonials

"Much of my time as an intern was spent helping juvenile clients. I provided support as clients moved through the diversion program and learned how to communicate and motivate clients with severe mental health concerns. It was the most diverse and educational experience I've had. I enjoyed working with the team and learning how to advocate for clients using life experiences to help build mitigation for their cases. I also learned about linking clients to resources in the community that could assist them over the long term. Prior to my graduation, when the PD-15 Circuit social work team offered me the opportunity to work with them, I was excited and took the opportunity immediately. I loved the work environment and being able to help the most vulnerable people in our community. Every day felt fulfilling and was worth getting up for."
